Thiruvananthapuram: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Mohan Bhagwat said on Wednesday that Hindus must wear traditional clothing when they attend public events and should not speak English. Inaugurating the annual Hindu Convention on the banks of the Pampa River in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district, he said that Dharma is the soul of Hinduism and everyone must practice it individually, The Print reported.

Bhagwat said that Hindus must ponder whether the language they speak, the places they travel to, and the clothes they wear align with the community’s tradition.

He said, “We should travel to places in our own localities and visit our own brothers who need help. We should not speak English, and we should eat our local cuisine. While attending events, we should stick to our own traditional clothing styles, not Western outfits,” The Print quoted the far-right Hindutva organisation’s chief.

Bhagwat is on a two-day visit to Kerala, and he launched a book based on Sree Narayana Guru, the renowned spiritual leader and social reformer from the state.

Bhagwat called for Hindu society to unite for its survival and strength. However, he added that the way the community’s strength is used is important and shouldn’t harm anyone else.

“But strengthening has its own fears. The strength, the way it’s used is important. It shouldn’t harm anyone else,” The Print quoted.

He furthered that religion is the cause of conflicts across the world since many believe that their religion and beliefs are supreme.

Launching Narayana Guru’s book, he said that untouchability and casteism are not Dharma.
