Barmer/Jaisalmer: A rare display of interfaith unity has emerged in Rajasthan’s border districts, where Hindu and Muslim communities jointly protested the demolition of Muslim religious structures by authorities. The action amid rising communal sensitivities has raised concerns among residents, who view it as a threat to long-standing local harmony.

In Barmer and Jaisalmer, villagers organised demonstrations under the banner “Sarvadharma Shanti Sabha,” calling for a halt to demolitions and demanding legal transparency before enforcement. Joint marches were held in villages, including Badbeer, where representatives submitted memorandums to authorities seeking review.

Local leaders and residents criticised the demolitions, alleging a lack of due process and insufficient consultation with affected communities. A sarpanch from Paradia gram panchayat called the action arbitrary, arguing that all religious structures should be assessed under uniform legal standards rather than targeting specific groups. Protesters also said several sites held historical significance and were respected across communities.

Residents stressed the issue is not communal but about protecting village unity. They said the removal of religious sites affects the social fabric of a region known for peaceful coexistence. Protesters rejected attempts to frame it as a Hindu-Muslim divide, insisting local harmony remains intact.

Authorities have defended the action as part of a border security initiative along the Rajasthan-Pakistan frontier under “Operation Sweep.” However, activists allege the campaign disproportionately affects Muslim religious sites across Barmer, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, and Sri Ganganagar, with notices issued to hundreds of structures.

Amid controversy, residents and supporters have pledged legal action to defend communal harmony and challenge the demolitions. Legal experts and human rights defenders have also expressed support, raising concerns over due process and civil liberties in the region.
