The land freed from encroachers has been used to accommodate Hindus expelled from Pakistan and Bangladesh in Uttar Pradesh.

"Hindus, who were living in Meerut for decades after facing expulsion from Pakistan and Bangladesh, could not afford to build their own houses or buy lands. We have given 63 such Bengali Hindu families two acres of land and 200 square yards for housing per family in Kanpur Dehat. These lands were freed from land grabbers," a state government spokesperson said. Rs 1.20 lakh has also been given to each of the 63 families under the Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana.

CM Yogi Adityanath assured that the 'freed' land, which currently comes around 64,366 hectares, was brought under a land bank, the official said. This land would be used for setting up schools, industries and other businesses. Several facilities of the Defence Industrial Corridor has already been built on these lands, he said. The land is also being allotted to the poor to build houses, he added.

Earlier, Yogi Adityanath had claimed that the anti-land mafia task force has freed 67,000 acres of land belonging to the revenue department. He was speaking at the Legislative Council.
