text_fieldsSrinagar: Heavy rains triggered a cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district, resulting in the deaths of four people, while one individual remains missing. In a separate tragedy, seven members of a family are feared dead after a landslide struck a village in the neighbouring Reasi district.
According to officials, the cloudburst occurred early in the morning in Rajgarh tehsil of Ramban, causing landslides and flash floods in the area and damaging several houses. Rescue and search operations have been launched, with teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, local administration, and residents working together to locate the missing person and assist those affected.
Authorities noted that the Meteorological Department had already issued warnings of heavy rains, cloudbursts, landslides, and flash floods across the Jammu region, including Ramban, which experienced intense rainfall overnight.
In a related incident, a massive landslide triggered by relentless rains struck Badar village in Reasi’s Mahore area. Sources reported that a house was completely flattened, and seven people inside, including a couple and their five children, are feared to have lost their lives, TNIE reported.
The couple killed in the Reasi landslide has been identified as 38-year-old Nazir Ahmed and his wife, Wazira Begum.
Rescue operations are still underway, with teams from the SDRF, police, civil administration, and local residents working tirelessly to reach those trapped under the debris.
Officials highlighted that Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed multiple cloudburst incidents in the past two weeks, resulting in severe loss of life. On August 14, a cloudburst in the remote Chesoti village of Kishtwar district, along the route to the Mata Machail temple, caused landslides and flash floods that claimed 68 lives, while 32 people remain missing as search and rescue efforts continue.
Similarly, on August 26, a massive cloudburst triggered a landslide on the route to the Vaishno Devi shrine, killing 34 people, most of them pilgrims, and injuring 23 others. Relief and rescue operations at the site are still in progress.
