Heatwave claims 25 lives in Maharashtra, 375 cases of heat-stroke reported
text_fieldsMaharashtra is seeing an unprecedented heatwave that raised the temperature to 46°C in some areas. 25 people have died so far due to the heat and 375 people suffered a heat stroke. Officials have asked people to take precautions to shield themselves from heat.
The state Health Department's Surveillance Officer Dr. Pradeep Awate said the temperature reached record highs in the past 100 years. 25 fatalities are the highest due to the heatwave since 2016. He added Chandrapur is among the global hotspots. IMD reports have given hope of a respite in the form of pre-monsoon showers in many regions of Maharashtra.
Mahabaleshwar, one of the hill stations and popular summer vacation spots, is at 31°C and its neighbouring town Panchgani is at 32°C. Despite their unusual temperature, both towns are the coolest areas of the state.
Several areas of the state have been seeing temperatures ranging from 35-44°C since March-end. Northern and central regions like Marathwada and Vidarbha are facing the worst with 40-46°C.
Maharashtra has so far reported 25 heatwave tragedies and 15 of them are from Vidarbha. 11 deaths were reported in Nagpur and 3 were in Akola. This is the highest death toll due to heatwaves in seven years. The District Health Committees are analysing victims' symptoms to confirm the cause of death. The Health Department was ready with its health contingency plan in February, said Dr Awate.
