Cambridge: The Chief Justice of India (CJI), DY Chandrachud, was honoured with the "Award for Global Leadership" by Harvard Law School.

The announcement of this prestigious award was made in January of this year during an online ceremony.

During his visit to Harvard Law School, CJI Chandrachud, accompanied by David Wilkins, Professor at Harvard Law School and Faculty Director, highlighted several notable initiatives undertaken by the Indian Supreme Court in his first year of tenure. These initiatives encompassed the implementation of technology in court proceedings and the launch of a handbook addressing gender stereotypes, among other progressive measures.

CJI Chandrachud also emphasised the significance of interdisciplinary studies, underscoring the interconnections between legal matters and fields such as medical science and technology.

In reference to legal aid clinics, he advocated for the active involvement of law students in real-time cases within local communities, proposing the development of clinical legal models.

Addressing the democratisation of the legal profession, CJI Chandrachud discussed a new law clerks' scheme that offers equal opportunities to all candidates seeking clerkships at the Supreme Court. He also expressed concerns about the mental health of lawyers and suggested that law schools should establish mechanisms to train students in stress management and mental well-being.

CJI Chandrachud, who holds an LLM degree and a Doctorate in Juridical Sciences (SJD) from Harvard Law School, engaged with students and faculty members across various departments during the visit.

The award presentation coincided with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Harvard Law School's Graduate Law Program.
