Hamas rejects UN Gaza resolution; says does not meet Palestinians’ rights

Gaza City, Palestinian Territories: Hamas said that it had rejected a newly passed UN resolution calling for the deployment of an international force in Gaza, arguing that the resolution does not respect the political or humanitarian needs of Palestinians.

In its statement, the group said the resolution fell short of meeting what Palestinians consider their rightful demands. Hamas also objected to the creation of an international force whose mandate would include disarming Palestinians in the territory.

The group warned that the resolution amounted to placing Gaza under international trusteeship — something it said the Palestinian people and their political groups would not accept, AFP reported.

Earlier in the day, the UN Security Council approved a US-sponsored resolution intended to advance President Donald Trump's Gaza peace proposal, which includes both the deployment of an international force and a framework for establishing a future Palestinian state.

The resolution passed with 13 votes in favour. Russia and China abstained, but neither exercised a veto, and Washington described the outcome as both “historic” and “constructive.”
