Gujarat HC says Ahmedabad slaughterhouse should close down during Jain festival

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court has declined a plea that challenged the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's closure notice to the city's sole slaughterhouse during a Jain festival called 'Paryushan'.

On what ground the court dismissed the plea will be in the detailed order, which is yet to be published. Meanwhile, the court also rejected the Gujarat government's demand that a penalty should be imposed on the petitioner.

Kul Hind Jamiat-Al Quresh Action Committee Gujarat, an umbrella organisation of slaughterhouses, and represented by Danish Qureshi Razaiwala cited the Punjab and Haryana High Court order staying the decision of the authorities to shut down slaughterhouses in Ambala owing to 'Paryushan'.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has passed a resolution demanding the sole slaughterhouse of the city to keep it closed between August 24 and 31 due to the 'Paryushan' and on September 5 and 9 in connection with the festivities.

The Committee argued the order was not less an infringement of the State's duty to maintain "social and economic welfare" and its duty to "raise the standard of living and quality of nutrition" of the citizens.

In the previous hearing, the High Court asked the petitioner "why can't you restrain yourself from eating for two days".
