Gujarat, a breeding ground of lockup brutality; 157 custodial deaths in 2 years

Gandhinagar: In a shocking revelation, Gujarat government on Wednesday said that a total of 157 custodial deaths were reported from across the state in two years from 2019 to 2020. Out of this, the kin of only one victim was compensated by the government with an amount of Rs 2,50,000.

Niranjan Patel, a Congress legislator from Petlad sought the information regarding custodial deaths who asked for the data on deaths occurred in police custody in the state during 2019 to 2020.

The state admitted that a total of 70 incidents of custodial deaths were reported in 2019 while 87 such incidents were reported in 2020.

Gujrat Home minister Pradipsinh Jadeja intimated the House that one family from Surat was compensated with Rs 2,50,000 and others didn't need to be compensated as proposed by the state government.

On another question over custodial deaths in Ahmedabad and Kutch in the last two years, raised by Jamalpur-Khadia legislator Imran Khedawala, the state answered that a total of 48 such deaths were reported by the police.

3 police inspectors, 5 sub inspectors,19 constables, 4 ASI's and 7 other policing staffs in connection with custodial deaths were subjected to further interrogations during that time.
