Govt orders social media to remove AI-generated deepfakes within 3 hrs
text_fieldsNew Delhi: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on Tuesday issued revised guidelines for social media intermediaries, including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, directing them to clearly label all AI-generated content and embed identifiers in such synthetic material.
Under the new rules, the government has set a three-hour deadline for platforms to remove AI-generated or deepfake content once flagged by authorities or ordered by a court. The notification also prohibits intermediaries from allowing the removal or suppression of AI labels or associated metadata once applied.
The updated guidelines require social media platforms to deploy automated tools to detect and prevent the circulation of illegal, sexually exploitative, or deceptive AI-generated content. Platforms must also periodically inform users, at least once every three months, about the consequences of violating rules related to AI misuse through privacy policies, user agreements, or other suitable methods.
“When an intermediary becomes aware of any violation regarding the creation, generation, modification, alteration, hosting, uploading, publishing, transmitting, storing, updating, sharing, or otherwise disseminating synthetically generated information, it shall take expeditious and appropriate action,” the order stated.
The guidelines mandate that platforms adopt reasonable and appropriate technical measures, including automated tools, to prevent users from creating, sharing, or disseminating synthetically generated information that violates any law, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023; the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012; and the Explosive Substances Act, 1908.
The draft rules also seek to mandate disclosure by users when posting AI-generated or modified content and require platforms to deploy technology to verify such declarations. Several social media platforms have already introduced features allowing users to label content as generated or modified using AI.
