Got sanction to prosecute NewsClick founder under UAPA: Delhi Police

New Delhi: The Delhi police on Tuesday informed a local court here that it has obtained sanction to prosecute NewsClick founder-editor Prabir Purkayastha under controversial Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, The Wire reported.

The police added that it had applied for sanction as part of a supplementary chargesheet in the case, say reports quoting PTI.

The Delhi police in its FIR accused NewsClick of having received funds from China to criticise Indian government’s policies.

It is part of a “conspiracy to disrupt [the] sovereignty of India and to cause disaffection against India”.

It further alleged that ‘secret inputs’ revealed that Purkayastha and a US based businessman identified as Neville Roy Singham intended to project Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh as not part of India, aiming at ‘undermining the unity and territorial integrity of India”, which NewsClick has denied, as per the report.

Meanwhile, the first chargesheet against Purkayastha and NewsClick was filed last month by the Delhi police.

Alongside, Delhi police seized the devices of both employees and contributors of NewsClick in October.

While Purkayastha is in judicial custody in the case, the portal's HR head Amit Chakravarty turned approver earlier this year and was pardoned, according to the report.

It is further reported that additional sessions court judge Hardeep Kaur posted the matter for hearing on April 30.
