Bengaluru: In Mandya district of Karnataka, where hijab became a simmering issue, a student in burqa was caught on camera being heckled by a group of saffron scarf worn boys when the girl was entering her collage.

In the video circulated on social media, when the girl in burqa was making her way into the Mandya pre-University college, a group of saffron scarf worn boys advanced towards her raising "Jai Shri Ram" slogan.

The girl also was seen shouting back "Allah hu Akbar" while the boys kept following her until the college officials held the boys off the girl.

Several colleges in the state have witnessed similar protests where students herded onto the colleges campuses wearing saffron scarves in protest against hijab wearing fellow students. The protests over Saffron Vs Hijab scarves turned out stronger today over the expected Karnataka High Court verdict on the subject.

The High Court is hearing today petitions filed by five women from a government college in Udupi, questioning hijab restrictions.

In Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) College in Udupi, two groups of students were seen calling out each other while the police stood between them to maintain the situation in control.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president D K Shivakumar said Tuesday, the situation in some educational institutions in the state has "gone out of hand". "I think the affected institutions should be closed for a week to restore law and order. Teaching can continue online," he said in a tweet.

The High Court verdict on the issue is expected shortly.
