New Delhi: The Supreme Court might consider some five petitions that seek a review of its verdict, acquitting three death row convicts in the 2012 case of a gang-rape and murder. A 19-year-old was brutally killed in New Delhi’s Chhawla area then, PTI reported.

A bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrchud and Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Bela M Trivedi will hear the petitions by circulation in chambers at 1:50 pm on March 2. The list of businesses uploaded on the SC website suggested so.

On February 8, SC had agreed to form a three-judge bench and hear the review petitions against acquitting the accused, saving them from capital punishment in the sensational case.

Those moved review petitions include the Delhi government, the father of the victim, the Uttrakhand Bachao Movement and the Uttarakhand Lok Manch.

The three accused allegedly gang-raped the girl, killed her and mutilated her body with weapons. After the trial court sentenced them to death, the high court upheld it in August 2014.

However, the Supreme Court acquitted them in November last year, setting the HC order aside and inciting a debate on its own decision.

Except for the plea seeking review of a judgement awarding the death penalty to a convict, such petitions are considered and decided in chambers.
