Thiruvananthapuram: After an article in the IS mouthpiece 'Voice of Koharasan' claimed that their first Indian suicide bomber was a Keralite who converted from Christianity to Islam, central intelligence agencies have launched a probe into the matter.

The article was in the chapter "Memories of Shuhada" dedicated to the memories of those who died fighting for IS. The identity of the person was not revealed in the magazine.

IS revealed that he was an engineering graduate from Kerala. He was working in Bengaluru before migrating to Dubai. After being drawn to Islam religion during his years in UAE, he started researching the religion online. After converting, he assumed the name Aboobacker Al-Hindi.

The article further said that he got attracted to the idea of Jihad and reached out to the IS sleeper cells in Dubai. He was planning to go to Yemen for further training but for some reason, had to return to Kerala.

After spending some time in Kerala, IS contacted him to tell him there is an opportunity in Libya. He reached the north African nation under the pretence of looking for a new job. He fought against the Libyan Army at Sirsit and later became a suicide bomber, said the article.

Central Intelligence agencies suspect that the suicide attack happened in 2015-2016. Sources say the agencies have details about 100 youths from Kerala who left home to join IS. Officials think that there could be more people who joined the terror organisation in Syria and Yemen.

According to the IS magazine, Aboobacker Al- Hindi is the third person from Kerala to have died for the cause of the organisation.

The other two are Mohsin and Dr. Ejas from the Kasargod district. Mohsin was the suicide bomber who attacked the Sikh Gurudwara in Kabul on March 25, 2020. He, along with two others, killed 25 people. Dr Ejas caused the death of 39 people in a jail in Kabul.

The Central Agencies are looking into the possibility that other people have left to join IS with Aboobacker Al-Hindi.
