Rohtak: An FIR has been registered at the Rohtak Sadar police station in connection with the suicide of Haryana police officer Sandeep Kumar, naming four individuals, including the wife of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar.

According to sources, the FIR names IPS officer Kumar’s gunman, Sushil, Kumar’s wife, P Avneet Kaur, Bathinda Rural MLA Amit Ratna and one other person. Officials have declined to release the FIR, citing the ongoing investigation. The registration of the case marks a major development in a controversy that has generated widespread public and political concern in Haryana. Authorities have not revealed the specific charges against the accused, and the investigation is currently underway.

The post-mortem of Assistant Sub-Inspector Sandeep Kumar is scheduled for 8 am tomorrow, followed by cremation at noon in Rohtak.

The case has drawn intense attention following the suicides of two senior Haryana police officers and allegations of caste discrimination, corruption, and extortion within the force. Reports of police links with gangsters have further damaged the department’s credibility. The controversy began with the death of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who took his own life after accusing senior officials of harassment and caste bias. On October 14, ASI Sandeep Kumar, who had been investigating corruption allegations against Puran Kumar, also allegedly died by suicide, leaving behind a note and a video accusing the officer and his family of bribery, extortion, and sexual harassment of women officers.

On September 29, IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch officer, was transferred from the post of IG (Rohtak range) to the Sunaria Police Training College. The sudden transfer reportedly disturbed him, and he went on leave for a week. On October 1, while travelling from Rohtak to Chandigarh, Kumar’s PSO, Sushil Kumar, was intercepted by a Rohtak police team that included ASI Sandeep Kumar. Sushil was detained without an FIR or warrant. Before being taken into custody, he left his service revolver in the car, the same weapon later used by Puran Kumar in his suicide.

Between October 1 and 5, Sushil Kumar was allegedly kept in illegal custody and pressured to make a false statement against his superior. Despite several appeals to the Haryana DGP and Rohtak SP, Puran Kumar reportedly received no response. On October 6, a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act was filed against Sushil Kumar for allegedly trying to extort Rs 2.5 lakh from a businessman. ASI Sandeep Kumar, part of the cyber investigation team, obtained phone data related to the case. Sources claimed the FIR was used to indirectly implicate Puran Kumar.

On October 7, Puran Kumar allegedly shot himself at his residence in Chandigarh, leaving behind an eight-page suicide note naming eight senior IPS officers and accusing them of defamation and harassment. The next day, his wife, IAS officer Avneet P Kumar, returned from Japan and lodged a police complaint. She initially refused to allow a post-mortem until the accused officers were arrested.

The controversy deepened when the SIT sought access to Kumar’s official laptop for forensic examination. Avneet Kumar handed it over but claimed the IT team failed to retrieve his digital fingerprint. She alleged the case was being distorted despite her full cooperation.

On October 14, ASI Sandeep Kumar, who had been investigating corruption cases linked to Puran Kumar, allegedly shot himself near the Rohtak–Panipat road. He left a three-page note and a video accusing Puran Kumar and his family of corruption and misuse of power.

In his note, Sandeep Kumar alleged that Puran Kumar had struck a Rs 50 crore deal with gangster Rao Inderjit, reportedly hiding in the US, to clear his name in a murder case. Inderjit is said to be associated with the Himanshu Bhau gang and linked to several criminal cases, including attacks on singer Fazilpuria and YouTuber Elvish Yadav. Sandeep Kumar said he was taking his life to demand a fair investigation, accusing Puran Kumar’s family of corruption, manipulation, and systemic abuse of authority.
