Bengaluru: A tweet describing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as dangerous to the nation has resulted in an FIR being filed against Amit Malviya, the BJP IT cell head, in Karnataka. The FIR, lodged on Tuesday at the High Grounds Police Station, came in response to a complaint filed by Ramesh Babu, the co-chairman of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) Communication and Social Media Department.

The complaint accuses Malviya of engaging in a conspiracy to create enmity among voters by spreading false information. It refers specifically to a tweet by Amit Malviya on June 17, which contained a video and accompanying remarks allegedly defamatory and inciting hatred towards Rahul Gandhi. Babu further claims that the video is misleading and aims to disrupt communal harmony.

In the controversial video, Malviya reportedly refers to Rahul Gandhi as "dangerous" and accuses him of playing an insidious game. The tweet also mentions individuals such as Sam Pitroda, described as staunchly anti-India, who allegedly work to defame India overseas and embarrass Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

As a result, Amit Malviya has been booked under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including section 153 (A) for promoting enmity between different groups, section 120 B for criminal conspiracy, section 505(2) dealing with statements creating or promoting enmity, and section 34 for acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention.

On June 19, Karnataka Minister for IT/BT, and Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Priyank Kharge, along with Ramesh Babu, filed a separate complaint on behalf of the Congress party.

This complaint also targeted BJP National President J P Nadda and BJP Chandigarh President Arun Sood. They alleged that the video shared by Amit Malviya contained a malicious and false 3D animated depiction of Rahul Gandhi, aimed at tarnishing his and the INC's reputation and inciting communal discord.

The recent FIR, however, only includes Amit Malviya as the accused, based on the written complaint filed by Ramesh Babu. The police will now conduct an investigation into the matter to determine the veracity of the allegations and ascertain any potential legal consequences for Malviya.
