The convener of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind in Muzaffarnagar, Maulana Mukarram Qasmi, has issued a statement condemning the event, claiming that it targeted a specific religion.
The controversy gained traction after a video from the fashion show went viral on social media, showcasing participants walking down the ramp wearing burqas. Qasmi argued that the burqa holds cultural and religious significance, symbolizing the tradition of 'purdah' or veil.
He expressed his disapproval, stating, "Burqa should not be treated as an item for display in a fashion show," and emphasized that such usage goes against the cultural values associated with the attire.
Qasmi further condemned the organizers for using the burqa in a manner that he believes disrespects religious sentiments and contributes to the misinterpretation of cultural practices.
He demanded an immediate apology from the college authorities and warned that if they failed to comply, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind would take legal steps against them.
