Bhubaneswar: Eight school students in Odisha's Kandhamal district were hospitalized after their classmates put instant glue in their eyes.

The students of Classes 3, 4, and 5 were sleeping at night at the hostel when some of their classmates sealed their eyes with instant glue.

The children awoke to pain and irritation as they were unable to open eyes.

As they began screaming, authorities rushed them to a nearby hospital before they were shifted to the district hospital in Phulbani.

Footage on social media reportedly showed the children with their eyes shut, crying, while doctors were trying to remove glue from their eyelids.

The incident took place at the Sevashram school in Kandhamal's Salaguda.

As students are getting treatment, the district administration has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

The adhesive, according to the doctors, have caused significant damage to their eyes but timely treatment could prevent vision loss.

One student has been discharged from the hospital, as seven others remain under observation.

The Kandhamal district administration suspended the school headmaster, Manoranjan Sahu, citing negligence.

Authorities announced strict action against those responsible for the gruesome act.

A district child welfare officer visited the hospital to check on the students.
