Expired driving licence? New rules bring major relief

Thiruvananthapuram: In a major relief for motorists, the Motor Vehicles Department has announced two significant changes to driving licence rules that will come into effect from August 15, benefiting both expired licence holders and those opting for early renewal.
The first amendment restores a 30-day grace period for expired driving licences. Under the revised provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, motorists will be allowed to continue using an expired licence for up to a month after its validity ends. The grace period, which existed under the original 1988 Act, was scrapped through the 2019 amendment but is now being reinstated.
The second change eliminates the loss of validity faced by motorists who renew their licences before expiry. At present, licences can be renewed up to one year in advance, but the renewed licence becomes valid from the date of approval, effectively reducing the overall validity period.
From August 15, that system will change. Drivers renewing within the one-year window will retain their full entitlement, with the validity of the renewed licence beginning only after the existing licence expires. This ensures that no part of the original validity period is forfeited because of early renewal.
The twin reforms are expected to benefit thousands of licence holders by offering greater flexibility, protecting the full validity of their licences and easing the renewal process under the amended Motor Vehicles Act.
