New Delhi7: The Election Commission has immediately suspended seven West Bengal officials for serious misconduct, dereliction of duty, and misuse of statutory powers linked to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voters’ list.

All suspended officers served as assistant electoral registration officers (AEROs) for the EC, assisting booth-level and electoral registration officers—state government employees on deputation—to update voter rolls and facilitate elections.

EC officials, quoting the orders, stated the poll body has directed Chief Secretary Nandini Chakravarty to ensure their respective cadre controlling authorities initiate disciplinary proceedings without delay and inform the Commission promptly.

The move intensifies the ongoing friction between the EC and West Bengal’s Trinamool Congress government over the special intensive revision of the voters’ list.
