Dharavi redevelopment is being done to benefit only one person: Rahul Gandhi
text_fieldsMumbai: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of prioritizing the businessman Gautam Adani over the people of Maharashtra, referring to the controversial Dharavi redevelopment plan, India Today reported.
Taking a dig at them during a press meeting in Mumbai, the Congress leader pulled two posters out of a safe with the first featuring PM Modi alongside Adani carrying the caption 'ek hai toh safe hai' meaning they are safe as long as they are together.
Rahul Gandhi was taking on PM Modi’s 'ek hai toh safe hai' (together, one is safe) slogan.
The second poster was a map of the Adani Group’s controversial Dharavi redevelopment plan and he said that the "safe" symbolised the wealth of Mumbai.
The Congress leader alleged that Adani was targeting the wealth with the support of the BJP-led government of the state, adding that the "entire political machinery" was used to allot the project to one person.
‘The Dharavi redevelopment is unfair, and it is being done to benefit only one person. We are not convinced how tenders are being given... Only one person is given all the ports, airports and wealth of India,’ he was quoted as saying.
Rahul Gandhi supported Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray’s promise of canceling the project if the alliance Maha Vikas Aghadi returns to power.
The Adani Group won the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, covering 600 acres in central Mumbai, in a bid in 2022 under the BJP-led Mahayuti government.
Following which, Opposition parties have raised concerns about transparency in awarding the contract.
However, the BJP termed the Dharavi project a transformative initiative for providing better living conditions for residents of the slum area.
