Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Derek O’Brien has called for "hard questions" to be posed to the Narendra Modi government regarding its treatment of the Christian community.

In a blog post on Friday, O’Brien raised concerns about the alleged targeting of Christian institutions and increasing violence against minorities in the country.

His remarks come days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a Christmas celebration organised by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) in Delhi, a move O’Brien described as insufficient in addressing the pressing concerns of the community.

The TMC leader questioned the government’s actions, including its use of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA), which he alleged has been “weaponised” to target Christian-run institutions. He also criticised the government’s handling of the situation in Manipur, where ethnic violence has led to widespread displacement and suffering, as well as its push for anti-conversion laws in several states.

O’Brien cited several states, including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, where such laws are in effect, arguing they infringe on fundamental rights guaranteed under Articles 14, 15, and 25 of the Constitution.

He further accused the government of fostering divisions among minorities, particularly through the Waqf Bill and its policies in Kerala, while failing to condemn hate speech and communal rhetoric.

Highlighting a surge in violence against Christian institutions, O’Brien called for accountability, referencing the case of Father Stan Swamy, a Jesuit priest and tribal rights activist who died in custody in July 2021. Swamy’s arrest under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and subsequent treatment drew widespread criticism.

“Do you remember Father Stan Swamy? Sipper? Straw? Death?” O’Brien wrote, recalling the denial of basic medical assistance to the activist during his incarceration.

O’Brien urged the Christian leadership to move beyond symbolic gestures and take a firm stand on issues affecting the community. He criticised photo opportunities like the CBCI's recent Christmas celebration, suggesting that more meaningful action is required to hold the government accountable for upholding the Constitution.

“This silence is complicit. More Christmases have gone by; now answers have to be demanded,” he asserted.

The TMC leader concluded by emphasising the need for unity and vigilance in protecting the rights of minorities, urging Christian leaders and parliamentarians to advocate for constitutional values and justice for their community.
