Delhi Police clarifies that alleged rape and murder of Dalit girl was suicide

New Delhi: Delhi police on Saturday clarified that the alleged rape and murder of Dalit Girl at Delhi's Gurmandi was suicide. In a rejoinder to the news reported by Madhyamam English news portal under the heading 'Hathras model rape, murder and cremation of Dalit girl in Delhi's Gurmandi'. On Saturday evening, Office of the Commissioner of Police,Delhi responded that no foul play had been found in the incident.

The rejoinder says that the crime scene was inspected by the Crime Team and then the body was preserved in mortuary for post-mortem. The statement says that there were no injury marks on the body of the diseased and inquest proceedings under Sec 174 of Criminal Procedure Code (Cr.PC) was initiated.

The rejoinder further states that according to the opinion of Board of Doctors at Safdurjng Hospital, who conducted the post-mortem, the cause of death of the girl was suicide.

Meanwhile a journalist working with 'The Caravan magazine' was on Friday allegedly assaulted by a senior police officer in North Delhi and detained for nearly four hours while he was reporting on protests against the alleged rape and murder of the Dalit girl.

Students and activists had gathered outside the Model Town police station to demand the registration of a first-information report in the case, against a complaint by her relative.

Ahan Penkar, the 24-year-old staffer of The Caravan was reporting on the protest concerning the alleged rape and murder of a Dalit teenager in north Delhi, says a The Caravan report.

Penkar has filed a complaint to SN Shrivastava, Delhi's Commissioner of Police against the alleged assault by Delhi Police. The Press Club of India has released a statement condemning the attack and demanding immediate action.

In early October, the 17-year-old Dalit girl had been discovered dead in the home at which she was employed as a domestic worker.

The police had ruled her death a suicide, but the family suspects that she had been raped and murdered.
