New Delhi: Delhi Police apprised the High Court in a status report that 15 special district cells exist to protect interfaith couples.

The report submitted before the court said that these cells provide lodging, bedding, and meals to couples. Citizens can also avail counselling through a probation officer. They can also seek medical help at the nearest hospital under police protection.

In 2018, the Supreme Court directed the government to create a special cell in every district to receive petitions or complaints of harassment. It also included a toll-free women's helpline operated by the Delhi Commission for Women.

Delhi police are also giving these cells publicity on social media. "As regards publicity/advertisement, it is submitted that the SOP and list of District Special Cells are uploaded on the website of the Department of Social Welfare of GNCT of Delhi. An SOP has also been issued by Delhi Police in this regard."

Last year, the Delhi government had issued a standard operating procedure for the protection of interfaith and inter-caste couples from possible harassment and threats in the city. The primary goal is to provide help to those in distress. Calls made by couples will be kept confidential. The cells set up by Deputy Commissioners of Police of respective districts include a round-the-clock helpline.

These cells will also take strict action against those who threaten interfaith couples.
