New Delhi: The meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) sank in chaos on Friday after councilors of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the BJP entered a shouting match.

Members were heard raising slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal.

In the midst of the unruly scenes, the election of Delhi Mayor was put off until further announcement.

The meeting held at the Civic Centre saw AAP and BJP councilors jostling, some falling to the ground as events unfolded today.

It all started when Satya Sharma, the interim Speaker appointed by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, administering the oath ceremony of the nominated members or alderman.

The election of the Mayor was to take place afterwards which however called off as chaos erupted.

AAP lawmakers rushed to the floor of the house after the speaker invited alderman Manoj Kumar to take oath.

AAP members clamoured for elected councilors to be sworn in before the nominated members.

AAP also opposed the Lieutenant Governor naming the 10 nominated members without consulting the Delhi government.

The AAP accused the Governor of favouring the BJP, with Arvind Kejriwal claiming that the Governor ‘intentionally’ picked up 10 nominated members favouring the BJP.

But Saxena appointed a BJP councilor, Satya Sharma, as temporary Speaker to preside over today's election while AAP chose for the post the senior councilor Mukesh Goyal.

Subsequently there followed noisy scenes with councilors of both parties tried to shout down each other.

Meanwhile, the BJP has claimed that it will win the Mayor's post.
