New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi government in Delhi has decided to extend the free rations to those who have no cards to get rations through the Public Distribution System. The needy will be getting free rations from June 5, informed Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.

Delhi is one of the worst COVID hit states in the country, where restrictions, including lockdown to curb the pandemic, have frozen the economic activities for months, leaving thousands of people jobless.

The most affected of these restrictions was the daily wage workers and migrants, who have been almost like in an abandoned state. The new announcement would be a great relief for them for most have no cards to receive rations through the PDS.

"Ration has started reaching government schools from today. Those who do not have ration card will also start receiving ration from June 5," he tweeted.

The state government estimated that around 20 lakh people who hold no cards will receive 5 kg food grain-free as part of these measures.

Earlier, Delhi's Food and Civil Supplies Minister Imran Hussain had announced the state's decision to distribute 4 kg wheat and 1 kg rice per person for free among those not covered under the Public Distribution System.
