New Delhi: A four-storey building in Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar area was evacuated on Sunday after it suddenly developed a tilt, prompting the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to direct the owner to demolish the structure voluntarily, officials said.

The civic authorities have asked the owner to undertake the demolition on Sunday. If the owner fails to comply, the MCD will take necessary action under the relevant provisions, according to a civic official.

The building, located in Shahdara, was evacuated immediately after the tilt was noticed, causing panic among residents in the surrounding area.

As a precautionary measure, police personnel cordoned off the site and restricted public access to the building. An MCD team also visited the location and assessed the condition of the structure.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and taking measures to prevent any risk to people living in the neighbouring areas, the official said.

The incident comes days after a five-storey building housing a boys’ hostel collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan, killing seven people and injuring several others.
