‘Dead’ man approaches police for help to prove he is alive
text_fieldsBelagavi/Karnataka: A man visited Belagavi Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan with his own death certificate and sought help to prove that he is alive, The Indian Express reported.
What happened was the visitor, Ganapati Kakatkar, was declared dead due to a mistake by a data entry operator, and the man is desperate to clear it after he lost his Aadhaar card, access to his bank account and several government benefits because of the mistake.
Ganapati says that the issue started when he and his brothers applied for a succession certificate to claim their share of the six acres and 23 guntas of land left behind by their grandfather, who passed away in 1976.
The grandfather had divided his land among three sons before his death but retained the six acres and 23 guns in his name. Even after his death, the land was not transferred, and over time, the grandfather’s three sons also passed away, leaving the property to his eight grandsons, one of them was Ganapati.
Two years ago, the grandsons decided to get the land transferred to their names but faced delays as the tahsildar’s office did not issue their grandfather’s death certificate. After the grandsons approached the court, the office was ordered to issue the mentioned certificate.
Following this, the revenue inspector’s office at Hindalga issued the certificate but made the mistake of adding Ganapati’s Aadhaar number to the death certificate instead of his grandfather's. He realized the issue only months later after his Aadhaar card got locked and his name was removed from the family ration card, officially declaring him dead.
Ganapati had visited local offices, including the tahsildar, raising his woes but to no avail.
However, Ganapati, who was accompanied by his family members to visit the senior police official on Monday, was assured that the matter would be sorted out soon. The Deputy Commissioner directed the assistant commissioner to take action in the matter, TIE reported.
