CRPF Director General AP Maheshwari announced that CoBRA, the CRPF's combat commando team, is planning to include women.
"We are seriously considering taking women to CoBRA," Maheshwari said at a news conference.
In 2008, the CRPF formed a team of 10,000 people to counter Maoists. The Combat Battalion for Result Action team, also known as CoBRA, has been specially trained and deployed in Maoist strongholds. CoBRA currently operates in Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh.
The CRPF is the largest paramilitary force in the country. Women were present in areas including law and order ever since the formation of Women's Battalion' under the CRPF in 1986. There are currently six units operating under the Women's Battalion.
