New Delhi: The criminal proceedings against former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain in connection with the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots case will remain with the Supreme Court's dismissal of his petition challenging the Delhi High Court for the same.

The Delhi High Court, on September 16, had rejected Hussain's petition seeking the quashing of criminal proceedings over the three FIRs filed against him by the Delhi Police. The FIRs charged his involvement in the riot.

While the Delhi High Court is set to hear the reply on similar cases against Hussain, and the matter along with other petitions are listed for hearing on January 25, 2023, the Supreme Court found it imprudent to interfere in a matter which is sub judice before the High Court.

In a separate matter, a Delhi court framed charges against Hussain earlier this month under Section 3 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002, punishable under Section 4 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002. The court observed that Hussain "engaged in money laundering" in connection with the Northeast Delhi riots.
