Court issues arrest warrant against Union Minister in theft case

Alipurdar (West Bengal): Union Minister for State for Home Nisith Pramanik, named in a 13-year-old jewellery theft case, has been issued with an arrest warrant by a court in West Bengal's Alipurduar, PTI reported.


In the case of which the hearing was carried out at the judicial magistrate; 's court, an arrest warrant was issued to a coaccused too on November 11.


The theft was reported at multiple jewellery shops in the vicinity of Alipurduar railway station and Birpara in 2009.


PTI reported that Pramanik's lawyer Dulal Ghosh did not reveal his client's next legal move.


Public prosecutor Jahar Majumdar told PTI on Wednesday that the matter was transferred from a special MP/MLA court in North 24 Parganas district to the Alipurduar court on the directions of the Calcutta High Court.


Minister Pramanik is a native of Dinhata town next to the Bangladesh border in north Bengal. He joined BJP in 2019 and got elected to Lok Sabha that year for the first time. Being a member of the Trinamool Congress earlier, he got expelled due to anti-party activities, and he joined BJP after.


Alipurduar Superintendent of Police refused to comment on PTI's queries.
