Contempt suit filed by MS Dhoni: HC summons IPS officer

Chennai: A Madras High Court division bench ordered an IPS officer G Sampath Kumar on Friday to appear on December 9 on a contempt petition filed by cricketer MS Dhoni.
The bench of Justices P N Prakash and R M T Teeka Raman issued the statutory notice after Dhoni moved the HC pleading to start contempt proceedings and issue summons against Sampath Kumar for his alleged statements against the Supreme Court and certain senior counsels in the matter regarding fixing of cricket matches.
In 2014, the former Indian men's cricket captain filed a civil suit to permanently restrain Sampath Kumar from making any scandalous and contumacious statements linking him over match-fixing and spot-fixing of cricket matches. He demanded the court to order Sampath to pay 100 crores as damages.
An HC interim order in 2014 had restrained Sampath from making the mentioned, but he allegedly filed an affidavit before the Supreme Court containing disparaging remarks against the judiciary and the senior counsel representing the state in the cases against him without mattering the order.
The Madras HC took the development to file after it was brought to its attention.
After obtaining consent from Advocate General R Shanmugasundaram on July 18 this year to file the contempt application, Dhoni preferred the present contempt application on October 11 this year to punish Sampath Kumar for his alleged acts of making remarks against the judiciary in violation of the court's interim order passed in 2014, PTI reported.
