Lucknow: The Congress may well not contest in bypolls for Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh after its talks with Samajwadi Party on seat sharing hit a blind alley.

Samajwadi Party, INDIA bloc ally, offered only two seats to the Congress where the grand old party demanded five seats.

It is reported citing sources that the Congress made it clear to the Akhilesh Yadav’s party it would not be contesting in two seats.

Samajwadi Party announced seven candidates, with one for Kunarki seat pending for today.

It is reported that Tej Pratap Yadav, Akhilesh Yadav's nephew, will file his nomination for the Karhal seat.

Many believe, despite its plans to sit outside polls, that the Congress may have a final discussion with Akhilesh Yadav.

Nine assembly seats Meerapur, Kundarki, Ghaziabad, Khair, Karhal, Phulpur, Katehari, Majhawan, Sishamau fell vacant after sitting MLAs were elected as MPs in the Lok Sabha polls.

Of the nine, the Sisamau seat became vacant as Samajwadi Party MLA Irfan Solanki was disqualified after being convicted in a criminal case.

The counting of votes will be held on November 23, along with Maharashtra and Jharkhand elections.
