Congress ahead in Haryana, crossing halfway mark to form govt
text_fieldsNew Delhi: The early updates from counting stations suggest that the Congress is well on the path to form a government in Haryana.
The first glimpse into results after 9 am showed the Congress leading in 55 of the 90 Assembly seats with the BJP in 25.
Exit-polls predicted the Congress returning to power winning 55 seats securing comfortable number of seats above 45. Poll pundits put the BJP at 26.
Meanwhile, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said the BJP will form the government in Haryana for the third time.
Saini, who took over as the chief minister in March, said that the BJP government had carried out ‘a lot of development work in the past 10 years’.
Even before clear lead emerged, the Congress workers started celebrations at the party headquarters in New Delhi.
In 2029 assembly polls, the BJP bagged 40 seats leaving the Congress in 31 and the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) 10.
The saffron party formed the government availing the support of the JJP and the post-poll alliance ended after Saini became the chief minister.
Where the BJP won all the seats in Haryana in 2019 Lok Sabha polls, it managed only five of the 10 seats in the last polls.
The Assembly polls were crucial for the party to showcase that it is still popular in the state.
