Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong has said India and China can work together on innovation and strengthen ties through youth engagement and cultural understanding.

Speaking at the fourth India-China Youth Dialogue in 2026, Xu emphasised the importance of mutual respect and deeper people-to-people connections.

He said young people play a vital role in shaping bilateral relations, noting historical links such as Chinese Buddhist monks travelling to India for teachings.

“The more the two countries understand each other, the closer our people will become, and trust will increase,” he said, adding that both nations have dynamic and creative youth populations.

The envoy urged both sides to act as good neighbours and support each other’s development, highlighting China’s willingness to welcome Indian youth. He also pointed to opportunities for collaboration in emerging sectors, including artificial intelligence, saying joint efforts could drive innovation.

Xu’s remarks come amid improving ties between the two countries after years of strain. Relations began to stabilise following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the 2024 BRICS summit in Russia.

Subsequent steps included disengagement along the disputed border and the resumption of special representatives-level talks in December 2024, the first such dialogue since 2019.

The ambassador said both countries are at a critical stage of development and should leverage cooperation, particularly among youth, to build a stronger future relationship.
