China becomes biggest buyer of Indian broken rice
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Where it was African countries previously, now China is buying most of India's broken rice.
The spike in demand for broken rice stems from its use in making noodles and wine in the country.
China emerged as the top buyer of Indian rice after a Chinese delegation visited several Indian rice mills before the outbreak of covid 19, according to The Indian Express.
A trade data for the year 2021-22 shows that China imported 16.34 metric tonnes (LMT) making up 7.7 percent of India's total rice export of 212.10 LMT.
Of the rice imported by China, nearly 97 per cent or 15.76 LMT was intriguingly broken rice, the report said.
However, India's total rice exports for the period of 2021-22 including both basmati and non-basmati was 212.10 LMT.
This figure is reportedly 19.30 per cent higher than 177.79 LMT exported in 2020-21. The same period showed demand for rice from India's neigbour jumping by 392.20 percent ranging from 3.31 LMT to 16.34 LMT.
Meanwhile, basmati rice accounted for 39.48 LMT of India's total rice export in 2021-22, which is 14.73 percent lower than 46.30 LMT exported in 2020-21.
Experts link the demand for broken rice to rising prices of corn. However, demand for broken rice peaked recently after prices of food items went up globally following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
