The children of former Congress MP Ahsan Jafri and his wife Zakia Jafri visited the remains of their home in Gulberg Society to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the riot.

The Jafris' daughter Nishrin and son Tanveer, as well as other former residents of the complex, paid visits to the society and their home, Indian Express reported.

The former Parliamentarian was one of 68 individuals slain in the Gulberg Society, which was targeted in the riots that erupted in the state following the February 27, 2002, burning of the Sabarmati Express train in Godhra, which killed 59 people, the majority of whom were kar sevaks returning from Ayodhya.

Zakia Jafri died of age-related causes in Ahmedabad on February 1 of this year. Meanwhile, the Movement for Secular Democracy (MSD) staged a demonstration at Town Hall Cross Road in Ahmedabad to demand peace, harmony, and justice.

Prakash N Shah, an activist and MSD convenor who attended the event, paid tribute to Zakia Jafri, describing her as a "symbol of the fight for justice," according to an organisation statement.
