Raipur: The Chhattisgarh government under Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has withdrawn a controversial order within 24 hours of its issuance, sparking political debate across the state.

Issued late Wednesday, the directive prohibited government officers and employees from holding political posts or engaging in political activities, with warnings of disciplinary action under the Civil Services Conduct Rules. It swiftly drew opposition, notably from the Congress party, which highlighted that such prohibitions already exist nationwide and questioned the timing and motive behind the fresh circular.

Congress leaders specifically asked whether participation in Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) events would count as a violation, intensifying pressure on the administration.

The Chhattisgarh Civil Services (Conduct) Rules already mandate absolute integrity and impartiality, barring employees from active political party membership or neutrality-compromising activities. Critics viewed the circular as a mere reiteration with political undertones.

The government's prompt withdrawal aims to defuse tensions, though it underscores the fine line between administrative discipline and political sensitivities in the state. Opposition demands for clarity on defining political activity persist, leaving the issue unresolved.
