Chhattisgarh assembly elections: Congress sets ambitious target of winning over 75 seats
text_fieldsRaipur: The Congress party in Chhattisgarh has set a formidable goal of securing a minimum of 75 out of the total 90 seats in the forthcoming state assembly elections, said Kumari Selja, the party's state in-charge.
The state assembly elections are scheduled to take place later this year.
Following discussions in meetings of the Chhattisgarh Congress political affairs committee and the party's Lok Sabha observers within the state, Kumari Selja informed reporters that the initial list of party candidates will be unveiled in the initial week of September. The meetings were attended by key figures including Congress general secretary KC Venugopal, Ajay Maken, who leads the party's screening committee for Chhattisgarh elections, and the state's Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to address a youth convention, Yuva Mitan Sammelan, in Raipur on September 2, while party president Mallikarjun Kharge is set to participate in an event in Rajnandgaon district on September 8.
"We are confident that we will win at least 75 seats. The planning commission (NITI Aayog) in its report has admitted that 40 lakh people in Chhattisgarh have come out of poverty. You can imagine how the state government has taken care of the needy. Our government has worked for the uplift of every section. Our target is to win at least 75 seats," Kumari Selja said.
Regarding the ticket distribution process, she explained that applications from ticket aspirants will be accepted at the Block Congress Committee (BCC) level until August 22, followed by BCC meetings on August 24 to select names for further consideration. The shortlisted names will then be forwarded to the District Congress Committee (DCC) by August 26. After the DCC meetings on August 28-29, proposals will be submitted to the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) by August 31.
Subsequently, the state election committee is set to convene on September 3, with the screening committee meeting taking place the following day. The recommendations arising from these discussions will then be submitted to the central election committee.
