Chahal and Dhanashree are officially divorced: lawyer
text_fieldsMumbai: Indian star spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and choreographer Dhanashree Verma are officially divorced, The Times of India reported, citing their lawyer.
The lawyer said that the marriage was dissolved as the petition for the same has been approved.
The divorce was finalized by the Bandra Family Court in Mumbai on Thursday. A usual six-month waiting period was skipped through a Bombay High Court decision in view of Chahal’s Indian Premier League (IPL) commitments.
Chahal’s counsel told Asian News International that the court granted the divorce decree and accepted the joint petition of both parties. Thus, both are no longer husband and wife.
It was in December 2020 that Chahal and Verma got married, but they have been living separately since June 2022. In February this year, they filed a divorce petition. When Section 13B of the Hindu Marriage Act mandates a six-month waiting period before a divorce is granted, the court accepted that they had been living separately for more than 2 years, and Chahal had to concentrate on IPL.
Further, Chahal has agreed to pay Dhanashree a total alimony of Rs 4.75 crore, of which 2.37 crore he has paid already. It is reported that the remaining amount will be paid once the official divorce decree.
When there were earlier reports that Dhanashree demanded Rs 60 crore as alimony, her family denied that. Her family released a statement which read, "We are deeply outraged by the baseless claims being circulated about the alimony figure. Let me be absolutely clear—no such amount has ever been asked, demanded, or even offered. There is no truth to these rumours whatsoever."
