Ceremony deifying PM Modi as Rama interrupted at Delhi Press Club
text_fieldsThe Delhi Press Club witnessed a ceremony to deify Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as a group of people chanted Hindu religious hymns sanctifying Modi before a cardboard cutout of him, though the ceremony was interrupted for violating the Press Club’s rules.
Dr Rajan Singh, vice-president of the Bihar State Transgender Welfare Board, had booked a hall on the Press Club of India (PCI) premises for a press conference on Thursday, August 20, but instead of a press conference, it turned into a religious ceremony in praise of Modi.
Videos circulating on social media showed participants reciting a “Modi Chalisa” and performing aarti before the cut-out. The PCI subsequently said on X that the terms of permission had been violated and that the event was interrupted and cancelled.
Singh later told PTI that the board intended to spend Rs 112 crore on constructing a temple dedicated to “Lord Shri” Narendra Modi, claiming that the prime minister had ensured that the transgender community “gets its rights”. He also said five acres of land would be earmarked for the proposed temple.
Singh was referring to the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Act, 2026, which has drawn widespread criticism from rights advocates who say it dismantles existing transgender protections.
