New Delhi: The Central government is working on electric highways powered by solar panels so that heavy-duty electric trucks and buses can recharge, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari proclaimed on Monday.

An electric high generally refers to a roadway which could provide power to vehicles transiting through it, even by overhead power lines.

Speaking at an event conducted by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC), the minister underscored that the Centre wanted to develop India's public transport system on electricity, PTI reported.

Gadkari said, "The government is strongly encouraging solar and wind energy-based charging mechanisms for electric mobility. We are also working on developing electric highways, which will be powered by solar energy, and this will facilitate charging of heavy-duty trucks and buses while running."

The minister further said that the Centre is also urging toll plazas to be powered by solar energy.

His ministry has conducted route optimisation works as well as designed fresh alignment across the country's major corridors.

He emphasised that well-developed infrastructures boost the economy and create fresh businesses and job opportunities. Towards that, "We are constructing 26 greenfield expressways," he added.

According to him, the new projects will receive speedy clearances and slash logistics costs under PM Gati Shakti Master Plan after its launch.
