New Delhi: The Centre has cleared the name of five judges for the Supreme Court. The union government a day ago had promised to make the announcement regarding the pending recommendations of the panel of judges known as the collegium for the elevation of five high court justices.

Union law minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted: "As per the provisions under the Constitution of India, Hon’ble President of India has appointed the following Chief Justices and Judges of the High Courts as Judges of the Supreme Court. I extend best wishes to all of them."

The new judges are Pankaj Mithal, Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court; Sanjay Karol, Chief Justice of Patna High Court; P.V. Sanjay Kumar, Chief Justice of Manipur High Court; Ahsanuddin Amanullah, judge of Patna High Court; and Manoj Misra. judge of Allahabad High Court.

A top court bench of Justices SK Kaul and AS Oka had expressed displeasure over the delay in clearing recommendations for the transfer of high court judges. They said it is a very serious issue and warned the delay may result in both administrative and judicial actions which might not be "palatable".
