Gorakhpur: A car narrowly escaped plunging off an unfinished overpass in Uttar Pradesh's Maharajganj district on Sunday night.

Coming from Nepal to Gorakhpur, the driver headed on the under-construction flyover on National Highway 24 at around 1 a.m.

The next the driver encountered was the car dangling dangerously over the edge of the overpass.

India Today reported that Google Maps had no indication of the flyover at the site of the accident.

The highway, connecting India and Nepal via the Gorakhpur-Sonauli route, is currently developing including a flyover near Bhaiya, Pharenda.

Eyewitness said that car headed toward the flyover in the dark.

The driver hit the brakes just in time spotting the abrupt end of the bridge, thus miraculously avoiding a fatal plunge.

That meant the car was left precariously dangling over the edge of the structure.

Residents of the area rushed over hearing a loud noise, only to see the car hanging mid-air.

Those travelling in the car came out unhurt, after a considerable effort and when the police arrived at the scene there was no one in the car.

The construction agency building the flyover removed the car using a crane by morning.

The occupants of the car sneaked off the scene driving the car without meeting authorities.

Pharenda SHO Prashant Pathak reportedly said: ‘By the time we reached the site, the car and its occupants had already left. They had the car removed with the help of a crane before our arrival.’

Although Google Maps showed route diversion, it did not indicate flyover at the site, according to the report.
