BJP wins unopposed in Surat; NDA opens account
text_fieldsSurat: One of Gujarat's 26 Lok Sabha seats, Surat, saw a distinctive election development on April 22.
Following the withdrawal of every other contender, including the Congress nominee, Mukesh Dalal, the candidate for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was proclaimed the undisputed victor.
Following the rejection of Nilesh Kumbhani's and his replacement's nomination papers, Mukesh Dalal emerged victorious without opposition. The remaining eight candidates withdrew as a result of the rejection, which was based on purported differences in the proposers' signatures.
Section 36(2) of the Representation of the People Act, which gives the Returning Officer (RO) the authority to review and reject nominations based on legitimate objections, was used to carry out the rejection.
In past elections, BJP has maintained a strong presence in the Surat Lok Sabha constituency.
