Bihar politics: Nitish Kumar government wins trust vote

Patna: The Nitish Kumar-led Mahagatbandhan government has comfortably won the trust vote in the special Assembly session. In the 243-member house, the new alliance won 160 votes in its favour.

77 of the BJP's members walked out.

When Deputy Speaker Maheshwar Hazari announced the vote of trust, BJP's former Deputy Chief Minister said it was not needed and objected to the process. The Speaker turned down his objection and conducted the vote.

CM Nitish Kumar accused the BJP of creating disputes in society. He also accused the Modi-ruled Centre of not doing any work other than advertisements. Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav said Bihar has given a special message to the nation through the result of the confidence vote.

He said the BJP is an expert in advertising. "Those leaders who give objectionable and communal statements are getting promotion in the Centre. When I left the NDA, opposition leaders from across the country called me over the phone and congratulated me for my separation from it. Now, we are committed to working for the people of the country."

He added that the BJP and RSS have no contribution to the freedom struggle. "Where were they during that? They will end the ideology of Bapu (Mahatma Gandhi). BJP used to create communal disputes between Hindu and Muslim community."

The eighth-time chief minister of Bihar said it is a poor state where his party has started Har Ghar Nal Ka Jal Yojana. "But the Central government has not been connecting every village with roads. It was a project of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government and my party was part of it," he added. He also alleged that the Centre is taking credit for the state government's schemes.

Nitish Kumar broke off his alliance with BJP recently saying the BJP workers in Bihar are only taking support from JD(U) and are not giving the same dedication back. Some speculate that the veteran politician suspected that BJP will attempt a Maharashtra model takeover of the government in Bihar as well. He has now joined hands with several other parties in the state to form a government.
