Bengaluru: A 36-year-old man who allegedly turned to theft to support his three wives and nine children has been arrested in Bengaluru, police said on Thursday.

The accused, identified as Babajaan, was caught with 188 grams of gold ornaments, 550 grams of silver ornaments, and ₹1,500 in cash, a police officer confirmed.

A case has been registered at the Electronic City police station, and with his arrest, authorities say they have cracked eight previously unsolved theft cases.

“It appears he found it difficult to maintain such a large family, which is why he became a thief. This is our preliminary understanding,” the officer told PTI.

According to police, Babajaan’s three wives live separately in Shikaripalya near Anekal on the outskirts of Bengaluru, in Chikkaballapura, and in Srirangapatna. He reportedly maintains contact with all of them and supports all nine of his children.

“He is the sole provider for the entire family and has become a professional thief,” the officer said.
