Bengaluru: Bengaluru Police Commissioner B. Dayanand announced on Saturday that all flyovers in the city will be closed on New Year’s Eve as part of heightened security measures. The decision aims to prevent untoward incidents and rampage by groups on flyovers during celebrations.

Addressing the media, Dayanand explained that the closure of flyovers, including those connecting the Bengaluru International Airport, is a precautionary measure given the potential risks associated with large crowds.

In addition to the flyover closures, Dayanand highlighted increased vigilance against drug distribution and rave parties in both the city and its outskirts. Police will enforce stricter measures at pubs, hotels, and restaurants, with instructions for them to close by 1 am on December 31.

Safety enhancements for the celebrations include the installation of CCTV and drone cameras at key locations such as MG Road, Brigade Road, Koramangala, and Indiranagar, areas known for large New Year gatherings. Dog squads will also be deployed, and additional lighting, barricades, and Fire and Emergency Services vehicles will be stationed throughout the city.

Traffic management will see one-way routes on MG Road and Brigade Road during the festivities. The Metro Railway Station will close from 11 pm onwards.

Over a lakh people typically gather at MG Road each year to usher in the New Year.

In his address, Dayanand also urged the public to report cyber fraud by calling the toll-free number 1930. He reminded citizens to avoid contacting police officers’ mobile numbers directly, as they would be engaged with other duties during the celebrations.
