Justice B. Sudershan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge and the INDIA bloc’s nominee for the upcoming vice-presidential election, filed his nomination papers on Thursday for the poll scheduled on September 9, 2025.

This marks the Opposition alliance’s formal entry into the vice-presidential race, where Reddy will contest against the NDA’s candidate, C.P. Radhakrishnan. According to officials, the former judge submitted four sets of nomination papers to the Rajya Sabha secretary general, who also serves as the returning officer for the election.

Several senior leaders from the Opposition camp, including NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, SP’s Ramgopal Yadav, DMK’s Tiruchi Siva, TMC’s Satabdi Roy, Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Sanjay Raut, and CPI(M)’s John Brittas, were present during the filing. Sources said as many as 160 MPs signed as proposers and seconders.

After scrutiny of the documents, the returning officer accepted Reddy’s nomination and handed him an acknowledgement slip, TNIE reported.

The announcement of Reddy’s candidature had been made earlier this week by Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, following a meeting of the INDIA bloc leaders.

Justice Sudershan Reddy is widely respected in legal circles and is considered a towering figure in Indian jurisprudence, known for his landmark judgments and his commitment to upholding social, economic, and political justice.
