An imam in Assam used mosque’s loudspeaker at dawn to raise an alert that helped save seven people trapped in a sinking car in a pond. The incident took place early on Tuesday in Sribhumi district, when a vehicle veered off the National Highway, crashed into a waterbody and began to submerge with most passengers asleep and the windows shut.

On hearing the crash, Maulana Abdul Basit, Imam of the local Jama Masjid and a teacher at Mirabari Madrasa, immediately used the mosque microphone to call on residents to rush to the spot and help. The announcement prompted villagers to hurry to the scene and launch a rescue operation, during which all seven occupants were pulled out of the submerged vehicle, a local resident told NDTV.

Basit later said to the The Observer Post that he had noticed the car’s headlights glowing under the water and understood that there was no time to lose. He stressed that his response was motivated solely by concern for human life, saying that religion was not a consideration and that saving lives was the only priority.
